SmartHeat®: Heated LED Lighting That Stays Clear When Conditions Don’t
Show Categories
LED lighting has raised the bar for visibility. It’s brighter, more efficient, and built to last longer than older technologies, changing what drivers expect from vehicle lighting.
As advanced as these lights are, cold weather introduces a dangerous issue most people don’t think about until they’re dealing with it firsthand. LEDs don’t generate much heat. That means snow, ice, and condensation can build up on the lens even when the light itself is working exactly as designed. When that happens, output drops, visibility suffers, and safety is compromised. Our line of heated LED lights with SmartHeat® is the direct solution to this problem.
Designed for Real World Conditions
Snow, sleet, freezing rain, and condensation all affect lighting performance in different ways. Ice can form quickly on a cold lens. Snow can accumulate at highway speeds or while idling. Moisture can fog the inside or outside of a light, dulling output and masking the beam.
SmartHeat® LED lighting is built to address those conditions before visibility starts to drop. By keeping the lens clear, SmartHeat® helps maintain consistent output and reliable visibility when it matters most.
This technology is especially valuable for vehicles that operate year-round, in unpredictable environments, and on schedules that don’t allow frequent stops or manual clearing.
How SmartHeat® Works
Our SmartHeat® technology uses a patented, thermally conductive grid built directly into the light. The system monitors temperature conditions in real time and operates automatically.
When a vehicle starts in cold weather or when temperatures drop, SmartHeat® activates. The grid gently warms the lens surface, melting ice, preventing snow from sticking, and evaporating condensation. Once the lens reaches the appropriate temperature, the system shuts off on its own.
In sustained cold, it stays active to keep buildup from forming in the first place.
Because sensor placement varies by product, SmartHeat® is calibrated to the specific light design, not just outside air temperature. That allows the system to respond appropriately across different applications and environments.
Feel the Heat
Traditional LED lights don’t produce the radiant heat needed to clear environmental buildup. That’s why headlights can ice over even while the beam is technically “on.”
In freezing rain, that ice can block light output almost completely. Snow can accumulate at highway speeds or while a vehicle is stopped. Condensation doesn’t require extreme cold at all; it can quietly reduce output and clarity in damp or rapidly changing conditions.
SmartHeat® addresses all of it:
- Ice is melted before it blocks the beam.
- Snow is prevented from sticking and building up.
- Condensation is reduced, keeping the light clear and usable.
The result is lighting that keeps doing its job when conditions are working against it.
Supporting Vehicles That Can’t Afford Downtime
SmartHeat® technology is available across J.W. Speaker’s lineup of LED headlights, taillights, and work lights. It’s also offered in custom OEM applications, where heated lighting can be integrated into existing designs or developed as part of a new light assembly.
For fleets, work vehicles, off-highway equipment, and specialty applications, that means less downtime and fewer visibility-related interruptions. The lighting stays clear. The vehicle stays operational.
SmartHeat® is available across multiple sizes, including compact configurations, making it easier to apply across different platforms without redesigning the system from scratch.
Built In, Not Bolted On
SmartHeat® isn’t an accessory or a workaround. It’s designed as part of the lighting system itself.
Our engineering teams work closely with OEMs and partners throughout the design process, whether adapting an existing SmartHeat® solution or developing a fully custom assembly. That approach reduces integration risk and helps ensure long-term reliability once the vehicle is in service.
Clear Light, Even When the Weather Isn’t
Ice, snow, and condensation don’t just reduce lighting performance. They pose safety risks and undermine the clean appearance LED lighting is known for.
SmartHeat® LED lights are built to keep lenses clear, maintain consistent output, and support safer operation in the conditions that challenge lighting systems the most. As vehicle designs continue to evolve, SmartHeat® offers flexibility to support more complex lighting aesthetics without sacrificing performance.
